We launched the used batteries collection network

One single battery thrown away in the nature pollutes 10 litres of water.

The RoRec Association started in October a national information, awareness-raising and used batteries collection campaign, dedicated exclusively to the members of the RoRec community. The main objective of our enterprise is to explain the harmful effects of batteries thrown away together with household waste in the absence of selective collection, the correct used batteries collection system and their introduction in the recycling process, in line with Government Decision no. 1132/2008.

Only 8% of the batteries in the world and rechargeable accumulators. 90% are single-use batteries for general use, and 2 % are small batteries (such as the ones for watches) which need special collection and recycling procedures, in order to avoid that the hazardous substances they contain reach the water and soil.

On average, 65% of a battery’s contents can be recycled and recovered: zinc, magnesium, carbon and steel. These elements can be seen as money, because the general costs for extracting these materials go up all the time and the resources become scarce. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that the substances in one battery can pollute 10 litres of water.

The main objective of our campaign is to ensure that we comply with the provisions of Government Decision no. 1,132/2008, which stipulates the following minimum collection rates: 25% of the quantity put on the market by September 2012, and 45% by 26 September 2016 respectively. Meaning that in almost two years we must ensure that one in four batteries sold enter the recycling process.
