The Environment Guard’s mascot for children created by a child

The National Environment Guard has a new mascot called Gardinel, whose role is to tell children how important it is to live in a clean environment, that we need to collect old household appliances and used batteries in a specially organised place and why it is important to recycle them.

Gardinel was created by Ioana Mania, an 8th grade pupil at the ‘Elena Cuza’ High School in Iaşi, who took part in the ‘Create the Environment Guardian Mascot’ national competition, which was supported by RoRec and Hellenic Coca Cola.

‘I’ve always liked to draw. This time I wanted to come up with something original. The drawing represents a personified basket with eyes and hands who is helped by animals to clean up. I didn’t choose people because they are the ones who usually leave the rubbish behind. It’s an honour for me to receive this prize,’ said Ioana Mania when the Environment Guard regional commissioner handed her the prize.

Gardinel got to work immediately and featured on the leaflets that RoRec has handed out during various educational activities for children, organised in three parks in Bucharest: Alexandru Ioan Cuza, Brâncuşi and Titani.
