RoRec tour de force “under” the Green Umbrella at Timisoara, Sibiu and Alexandria

Another important ecological initiative RoRec Association was involved in, in the last month, was the “Romania’s Green Capital” project, a campaign organized by Tuborg Romania as a part of the “Green Umbrella” series.

Thus, in Timisoara (July 20th – August 1st), Sibiu (August 13th – 15th), and Alexandria, Teleorman county (August 27th – 30th), RoRec volunteers have taken part in a campaign aimed to apprise the locals regarding WEEE environmental protection and invite them to participate in WEEE collection activities as well as cleaning of public spaces.

In Timisoara, 30 volunteers walked for 2 days along the entire city, encouraging the citizens to bring their old appliances to the temporary drop off centres set in the Dacia neighbourhood and the central Union Square.
Overall, more than 400 items have been collected, amounting to almost 2,000 kilos of WEEE, which will be correctly recycled under the supervision of the RoRec Association.

“The people of Timisoara have had positive reactions to our messages and have actively contributed to supporting environmental actions, as this waste will end up at specialized recyclers to be treated according to the environmental standards. WEEE is ten times more toxic than household waste, containing dangerous substances, such as lead, mercury or cadmium. Recycling WEEE in compliance with European environmental standards is mandatory, so as to make sure it doesn’t end up polluting the water, the soil or the air. Following the correct treatment, these fractions will be reintroduced in the industry as secondary raw materials – and that is a sample of wise management of the natural resources”, Liviu Popeneciu, President of the RoRec Association, said.

Also, with the support of representatives of the Timis County Police Inspectorate and of the 30 volunteers, over 2,000 stickers bearing the message “No trash is thrown on the street from this car” have been distributed to drivers-by, in the city’s main crossroads.

The search of the “Green Capital of Romania” continued at the end of August in Alexandria, on the occasion of the City anniversary, where 133 inhabitants drop off 176 old appliances, gathering around 1500 kilos worth of WEEE in only few days.

Just as the Green Umbrella tent was erected downtown, volunteers were spreading throughout the city to promote the WEEE collection campaign. Those who brought to the collection point WEEE received, just like the people in Timisoara, instant presents: badges and bracelets, as well as tickets to the tombola with awards such as bicycles, digital photo cameras, rollers and an MP3 player.

However, the largest quantities of WEEE has been collected in Sibiu, in the Vasile Aron neighbourhood, between August 13th – 15th, during the Green Umbrella campaign – over 2,500 kilos of WEEE – during one of the largest rock festivals in Romania, ARTmania.

“The people of Sibiu have re-confirmed what we already knew: that they are responsible citizens and have a European civic attitude. It is very important for us that both the inhabitants of the cities we go to and the tourists visiting these events are informed on WEEE collection and further transmit our invitation to recycle”, Liviu Popeneciu, President of the RoRec Association, said.
