Launching a new WEEE Drop off Centre in Calarasi

On 12 March 2010, the RoRec Association, in partnership with the City Hall of the Calarasi Municipality, launched the 12th centre of the RoRec WEEE Drop off Centres Network.
‘Our objective when launching the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Drop off Centres is to offer to communities in Romania a public service at European standards, in partnership with the local town halls and authorities,’ said Mr. Liviu Popeneciu, President of the RoRec Association.
Since July 2009, the RoRec Association has launched 11 WEEE Drop off Centres, part of the RoRec WEEE Collection Centres National Network, in Alexandria, Bistrita, Focsani, Galati, Mangalia, Resita, Tulcea, Sinaia, Sacalaz, Valenii de Munte and Voluntari.
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Drop off Centres are meant to help people who choose to dispose of their WEEE in a responsible manner and who understand that selective waste collection and recycling is a natural thing to do.
One fundamental and constant aim of the Romanian Association for Recycling is to inform consumers about the harmful effects that the waste electrical and electronic equipment has on the environment, but also to raise awareness to the rational usage of resources, as WEEE represents a source of secondary raw material.
The event organised on 12 March, whose motto was ‘Invitation to Recycling’, started at 9 a.m. with the opening of the mobile drop off point in Piata Prefecturii. The inhabitants of Calarasi and of the neighbouring area brought here their old or broken electrical appliances. Each person who handed over a piece of equipment had the possibility to enter a raffle and could win one of the 5 A+ energy-class ‘6th sense’ washing machines offered as prizes by Whirlpool Romania.
At 10.30, a press conference was organised at the Municipal Sports Club (Clubul Sportiv Municipal) and the programme continued with a round table on ‘Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) Management’. The participants were representatives of the Calarasi Prefecture and County Council, the Calarasi Environment Protection Agency, the local Chamber of Commerce and Industry, representatives of the county’s town halls and village halls, of the civil society and of the waste collection services.
The mobile collection centre closed at 5 p.m. 192 persons brought in 576 old appliances, meaning approximatively 6 tons of DEEE.
At 6 p.m., the participants were invited to the raffle draw at Teatrul Popular, which was followed by a special Anda Adam concert.
The winners of the Calarasi raffle are:
1. VASILE ALEXANDRU, 18 – 44 Horia Str., Slobozia, tel. 0721382643; equipment handed over: TV set.
2. BRANDUSE SILVIU,19 – Crisana Str., Calarasi, tel. 0727317350; equipment handed over: PC mainframe.
3. PUCHEANU TUDOR, 66 – Progresul Str., bl. A28, ap. 36, tel. 0242 331146; equipment handed over: microwave oven.

‘Recycling means respect for the law and for ourselves.’ This is the RoRec Association’s motto, and its message to all Romanian citizens is that recycling should be seen as an issue that concerns all of us, as a necessity and a responsibility of each of us.
