Eco-education and on-line interaction

Last month, the news came out that, according to a WHO study, only 11% of 11-old girls and 24% of boys of the same age get at least one hour of exercise. This means that Romanian children are some of the most sedentary in the world.

Apparently, this news has nothing to do with ecology and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) collection, but it shows children’s lack of interest for a healthy life and environment.

The RoRec Association wants to contribute to the eco-education of the future adults through its website www.roreckids.org.ro. Here, children can find many useful suggestions on healthy lifestyles, a balanced diet and especially recommendations regarding exercise.

Exercise is the perfect replacement for a sedentary life, dependent on private or public means of transport, which are all polluters and consumers of energy.

Roreckids.org.ro includes a photos section, where images sent by children are posted, as well as a downloads section, where children can find a school timetable with eco-illustrations.

As a first concrete action meant to increase children’s interest for a healthy life, the website invites them to participate in a special competition: ‘Green Inspiration’. It is an essay competition, on the subject of pollution, the way it affects us and what we should do to reduce it. The project is organised in partnership with the Environment Guard. The results will be announced at the end of January and the best essays and their creators will be presented on roreckids.org.ro and on the RoRec Association web site.
The prizes are a laptop, a video camera, a photo camera, three bicycles and ten digital photo frames offered by Philips. The deadline for entries was 9 January, and the winners will be announced at the end of the month.
