Collection record at Brad
The largest quantity of waste electrical and electronic equipment collected until now during the launching of Drop-off Centres in partnership with the town halls was registered in Brad, in Hunedoara county, in April 2010. The town, which is situated on the west side of the Apuseni Mountains and has only 17,000 inhabitants, has set a record worth to be remembered.
Brad is a mining town, not far away from Avram Iancu’s birth place. Its mines were known even before the Romans conquered Dacia. It seems that the gold extracted from these mines as early as 21 B.C. was sent to the Egyptian pyramids, to Rome and, later in history, even to communist Russia.
The inhabitants of Brad are known as the ‘sons of the Mountains Prince’, Avram Iancu. Once again, they have given a proof of their diligence, if any was needed, by breaking the responsibility record. For two thousand years, tradition was linked to the work in the mines. Now, the people of Brad ‘dug’ in their homes and brought to light over 7.5 metric tons of WEEE. To be more precise, on 9 and10 April, the 628 participants brought over to the Drop-off Centre in Brad no fewer than 857 items, most of them TV sets (311).
At the same time, the participants at the WEEE collection campaign had the chance to win new home appliances, offered as raffle prizes by Albatros. The first prize was won by a 9-year old girl who actually celebrated her birthday on the stage raised for our event.
The children did not want to be left aside, so they entered the ‘Green Inspiration’ drawing competition and sent us many drawings, so the jury had a difficult task to select the winners. In the end, special prizes were offered in addition to those initially announced.
