On 20 April, the well-known magazine ‘The Diplomat’ organised the second edition of an important event for the environment, the National Waste Management Forum. The Romanian Association for Recycling RoRec was one of the event’s supporters.

The meeting was opened by Mr. Mircea Ioan Cotosman – Secretary of State in the Ministry for the Environment and Forestry – who underlined the government’s concern with regard to the transposition into the national legislation of European Directive 98/2008, the framework directive on waste, and the fact that coherent waste management systems in Romania represent a priority for the ministry.

A series of important topics were debated during the first session of the Forum, including the realities of the waste electrical and electronic equipment management industry in Romania and the compliance with the legislation.

The representatives of the Ministry for the Economy, Commerce and Business Environment and of the Ministry for Environment and Forestry explained the European WEEE management trends, as well as aspects of WEEE collection in Romania.

The RoRec Association presented the advantages of waste electrical and electronic equipment Drop-off Centres, a local initiative at European standards. In this context, the RoRec Association project was confirmed as the necessary link in the process of taking over WEEE from the citizens and transferring it to the recycling industry.

Aspects of the waste collection, treatment and recovery process were discussed during the second session. Issues such as the financing of environment projects, waste management legislation and the reduction of pollution by increasing the degree of waste recovery were also debated.
