The Green Initiative Association and the ‘Terra, our only home’ awards
The Green Initiative Association and its partners, including the RoRec Association, organised on Friday, 21st May, the ‘Terra, our only home’ Awards Gala Ceremony, dedicated to the schools and high schools which obtained the best results in the project’s 2009 – 2010 edition.
The ceremony took place at the ‘Gheorghe Şincai’ National College in Bucharest and gathered the members of project teams representing the 15 secondary schools and high schools in the capital which participated to this project.
The RoRec Association decided to support the steps taken by the Green Initiative team in order to change personal and collective behaviour. ‘Correctly recycled, waste becomes valuable’, said Iuliana Niculescu, the representative of the RoRec Association at the Awards Ceremony. ‘It is very important to us that the project’s message may reach the members of the community through the pupils and teachers involved in these actions and raise the interest of the local administration for investments that would turn schools into energy-efficient public buildings,’ she concluded.
The Green Initiative event included a practical demonstration, as the guests were asked to bring over portable accumulators and batteries and put them in the special container installed at the entry of the auditorium. ‘We had an extraordinary surprise when we saw how many batteries were collected. This is the best proof that students and their teachers take a real interest in collection and recycling topics. It was an opportunity to prove how easy it is to get involved in such activities,’ said Iuliana Niculescu. After the event, the ‘Gheorghe Sincai’ National College signed a partnership protocol with the RoRec Association and opened a permanent batteries drop-off centre. So, as of May this year, the college students and teachers can set an example for other schools in Bucharest.
The winners received prizes from the project’s sponsors and supporters: The Romanian Installation Engineers Association – Bucharest Valahia Branch (Asociatia Inginerilor de Instalatii din România – Filiala Valahia Bucuresti), The Commission of Energy Auditors – AIIR, Vitastal Consulting, Jetrun EnergoEco, Acer, GreenWEEE International, Greentech, Greenfiber, the UN Information Centre for Romania, Humanitas Publishing House, Robert Bosch SRL, WWF Danube-Carpathian Programme, Green Report Magazine, ‘Casa şi gradina’ Magazine, EuropeDirect Centras, Climate Action Network Romania.
Iuliana Niculescu, the RoRec Association representative, delivered a short speech on the importance of WEEE collection and recycling, and offered examples of how the ‘Carbon footprint’ can be reduced by using energy-efficient electrical equipment.
