Hunedoara is home of one of the most beautiful and well-kept castles in Romania, but also for a WEEE collecting center, established by RoRec in March, in partnership with the local municipality.

„The Hunedoara city hall has entered, on March 26th, 2010, the first county-wide partnership with the RoRec Association, on establishing a WEEE Drop off centre, within the RoRec’s WEEE Drop off Centers National Network. It’s vital, for mankind’s future, that selective collecting and recycling becomes a natural habit. Every single environmental action reminds us that it’s only up to us all to turn the desire to protect the environment –and, implicitly, our health- into reality”, said Mr. Ovidiu Hada, Mayor of Hunedoara.

Based on this partnership, RoRec has continued its „The waste doesn’t belong at home. Take it for a hike!” WEEE collectionng campaign in Hunedoara, in the last week-end of September, together with the Hunedoara Municipality and with the support of Black&Decker and the Carpatcement Group.

The collection campaign in Hunedoara started on Thursday, September 23rd, with a meeting with the press, during which journalists have been provided with details on the objectives, evolution and impact of this project on the Hunedoara county communities. The next morning brought the opening of the temporary drop off points, in front of the Cultural House and at the entrance in the Municipal stadium. The two collecting points have also remained open on Saturday, September 25th.

More than 400 locals have joined this action, disposing, for proper collection and recycling, 13,300 kg of WEEE. Each of those bringing in an old appliances has received a ticket for the raffle for the 60 prizes – 5 DHS bicycles and 55 Black&Decker household appliances.

The Hunedoara campaign is not the first such initiative carried on in the area: similar actions have been successfully implemented, starting with late August, in Orăştie, Simeria, Geoagiu, Deva, as well as other neighboring localities; the initiatives will continue being organized periodically, with the support of local authorities and communities.

„Two factors are paramount for the success of this process: establishing the infrastructure required for selective collection (drop off centers that meet all the environmental standards), and informing and raising the public awareness, so as to convince the citizens to use this service. Our part will be to provide actual support for local authorities, given RoRec’s experience in collecting and turning in for recycling of electric and electronic waste”, stated Mr. Florin Popa, Project Manager RoRec Drop off Centers.
