If I were President of the World...

We asked the members of our community the following question: ‘If you were President of the World, what decision would you make, during the next five years, in order to reduce the carbon footprint?’
Today’s answer comes from Mr. Dumitru Mihalescul, General Director of Marelvi Impex SRL, whom we would also like to thank for accepting our invitation.

‘I would implement an international programme, coordinated by each country’s Ministry for the Environment, which would include the following elements:

  1. Incentives for building houses with heating systems based on solar panels.
  2. Strict recycling programmes (separating waste according to categories: paper, plastic, glass) and enforcing serious fines for failure to comply with the legislation.
  3. A ban on the production of non-recyclable wrapping and packaging materials.
  4. Programmes aiming to replace water- and energy-intensive household appliances and sanitary installations. Implementation of a government subsidies system aiming to encourage the replacement of such items on the basis of efficiency criteria. Promoting such programmes through comprehensive educational and awareness-raising campaigns on the long-term benefits of equipment that uses small amounts of water and energy.
  5. Modernising water and sewage systems in order to avoid water losses.
  6. Passing legislation on the implementing and using recycling and water treatment systems which would comply with strict environment protection norms in all companies, factories and plants.
  7. Ensuring that houses are only sold on the basis of compulsory energy efficiency and water consumption certificates.
  8. Government programmes as incentives for the production and selling of hybrid cars.
  9. Banning / taking out of circulation polluting vehicles.
  10. Strict monitoring of deforestation.
  11. Awareness-raising and education campaigns in the national media on the importance of reducing the carbon footprint.’

Here is a clear, specific and coherent programme. Are we going to vote for it?
