More than 100 representatives of local authorities in Transylvania as well as representatives of the civil society gathered in Cluj at the Local Public Administration Symposium, organised by BTL Design together with the Romanian Local Authorities Federation and the Association of Romanian Municipalities.

The Romanian Association for Recycling RoRec, as official partner in the event, brought to the fore the waste electrical and electronic equipment Drop-off Centres, as a waste management solution at European standards.

The solution offered by RoRec comes at a moment when Transylvania is faced with a series of environment problems, including the Pata Rat landfill, which, according to Mihaela Beu, deputy general director of the National Environment Guard, must be closed this year.

Florin Popa, manager of the Romanian Association for Recycling RoRec Drop-off Centres, explained that the RoRec waste electrical and electronic equipment drop-off centres project can only work in partnership with the town halls and it envisages the creation of a permanent network. The existence of such a centre generates a continuous waste flow from the citizens to the recyclers and the WEEE, which has a very high toxic potential – approximately 10% higher than household waste – no longer enters the parallel collection channels.

The partnership between town halls and RoRec requires the municipalities to give their approval for the creation of such centres and to ensure dedicated collection spaces.

Therefore, if the Cluj municipal authorities agree with RoRec’s proposal, the inhabitants of the county will be able to bring over waste electrical and electronic equipment to a centre set up for this purpose, from where such waste will be sent to be sorted and recycled according to specific European norms. At the same time, the town hall takes an important step in establishing a dialogue with the citizens and offers the framework needed by Romania in order to fulfil its obligations according to the European Union requirements in the field.

The reunion in Cluj is part of a series of four meetings with local authorities related to various solutions for local communities.

The nest three editions will gather representatives from the other regions of the country: Moldova, Muntenia-Dobrogea şi Oltenia-Banat.

The Romanian Association for Recycling RoRec will be present in Bacău on 29 April, together with officials from the Ministry for the Environment and Forestry, the Ministry for Administration and Internal Affairs, as well as other local and national authorities.
